Pulse Electronics Corporation announces that it has been nominated for GSMA's 17th annual Global Mobile Awards 2012 in the Best Technology Breakthrough category. The nomination is for Indie--Operator Independent Hardware. Co-designed and optimized by EPCOS, a TDK group company, and incorporating a Pulse Electronics 3-feed antenna, Indie makes it possible to have truly global LTE smartphones and provides the single RF platform sought by the Next Generation Mobile Network (NGMN) operator alliance.
Pulse's new antenna enables operator-independent global roaming capability for LTE mobile devices. Compatible with EPCOS RF front-end module (FEM) technology, it has been proven to support 16 frequency bands, including Japanese frequency bands in the 1.5 GHz range. This breakthrough results in a smartphone RF platform that solves RF challenges from emerging system requirements such as global roaming and downlink inter-band carrier aggregation for LTE mobile devices. It is the only high-end platform that can be used to serve the majority of operators with the same hardware configuration without modifications.

The Best Technology Breakthrough category recognizes the many technological advances outside the core network infrastructure and radio access layers that the mobile industry sees each year. It captures breakthrough technology enhancements in the mobile ecosystem and its tremendous diversity as it continues to innovate and add new dimensions to the customer experience.

We are honored to be nominated for this award, especially in the technology breakthrough category, said Petri Toljamo, general manager, Pulse Electronics Mobile Division. This unique RF platform enhances the entire smartphone ecosystem and offers almost endless possibilities. It provides network operators with easy access to multiple markets, compatibility with multiple OEM designs, and worldwide support. Users benefit from smartphones that offer excellent radio performance almost anywhere in the world.

GSMA represents the interests of mobile operators worldwide. Its Global Mobile Awards offer organizations across the global mobile eco-system the opportunity to showcase their latest and best mobile products, apps, services, and initiatives. More than 170 independent analysts, journalists, academics, and subject matter experts throughout the world participated in judging a record 600 entries. In addition, the chief technology officers of 16 mobile operators took part in judging the Best Mobile Technology Breakthrough category. The winners of the GSMA Award will be presented on Tuesday, 28th February at the GSMA Mobile World Congress, in an afternoon ceremony.
