NEC has announced that its microcontroller abstraction layer (MCAL) software for V850ES/Fx3 microcontrollers is integrated into a platform solution for door modules which Kostal GmbH & Co. KG will be launching. The focus for this project is to create a platform solution for door modules based on AUTOSAR standard software without compromising functionality or real-time and cost requirements. This objective will be achieved by combining Kostal’s excellent system and software know-how with best-in-class microcontroller and software know-how from NEC Electronics.
NEC Electronics contributes with the microcontroller abstraction layer (MCAL) software and the V850ES/Fx3 microcontroller. Using NEC Electronics’ V850ES/Fx3 microcontroller and MCAL software, which has been optimised for the microcontroller architecture, is essential for achieving the high functionality required for this application. NEC Electronics’ MCAL software contains all of the device drivers and interface modules specified by AUTOSAR. Furthermore, to match the exceptional quality standards of the hardware, the MCAL software was developed using well-established software processes certified to CMMI and SPICE models.

Kostal incorporated NEC Electronics’ device drivers into its AUTOSAR solution, which consists of basic AUTOSAR software, including operating system, memory stack and communication modules. Continuous and strong cooperation between Kostal and NEC Electronics Europe during software integration resulted in an optimized system solution within the scope of the given AUTOSAR and project specification.

While vehicle users show increasing demand for greater software functionality, manufacturers require a faster time to market for their solutions. Both necessities can be supported by the usage of standardized software. This need for standardization was identified by the automotive industry and resulted in the formation of the AUTOSAR partnership. Kostal and NEC Electronics, both major players in the automotive electronics industry, are members of the AUTOSAR partnership. To achieve the AUTOSAR goals of modularity, scalability, transferability and re-usability of software functions, Kostal is developing a generic software stack for all door module projects.

The AUTOSAR based Kostal door module platform will ramp up in Q2 2009.
