The Nanotechnology Knowledge Transfer Network (NanoKTN), one of the UK’s primary knowledge-based networks for Micro and Nanotechnologies, is pleased to announce details of a seminar it will be hosting at Innovate11. The seminar will explore the issue of scaling-up the manufacture of nano and microtechnologes, with a theme of clean energy and will feature three speakers who represent different stages of the development cycle. The IPGroup fund early stage and University spin-outs, Nanoco are currently scaling up the production of quantum dots and Sharp Laboratories will give the ‘end-user’ perspective. The speakers will draw on their own experiences to discuss issues related to developing a business strategy, overcoming market barriers, and funding.
Hosted by the Technology Strategy Board, Innovate11 is the leading networking conference and exhibition event for businesses to meet other businesses, government and academia with the aim of making innovation happen – creating opportunity and growth for the future.

This year’s event takes place on October 11th and will address all aspects of challenge-led technology innovation. This year the event will pay particular attention to digital, health and wellbeing, energy, high value manufacturing, travel & transport, agri-food and the built environment.

“Scale-up is a critical phase in the commercialisation of a new technology and can pose significant challenges to a small company” comments Dr Martin Kemp, NanoKTN Theme Manager who will chair the meeting. “End users often require proof of large scale manufacturing capability before placing an order, and investors require proof of the order before investing in scale-up, a chicken and egg situation. This seminar will look at some of the potential solutions such as private investment, government incentive mechanisms, strategic partnerships and development centres.”

The seminar session is aimed at end-users and developers working in nanomaterials, nanoprocessing and nanocoatings, as well as materials convertors, government funding bodies and investors who are looking to understand more about nanoscale technologies. The NanoKTN look forward to a wide representation of the supply chain, particularly small companies addressing these issues.
