The Nanotechnology Knowledge Transfer Network (NanoKTN), one of the UK’s primary knowledge-based networks for Micro and Nanotechnologies, is pleased to announce the success of one of its members, Mantis Deposition. Technical Director, Dr Alistair Kean, believes support from the NanoKTN has had a significant impact on the commercial success of the business.
Mantis Deposition is a speciality instrumentation company, developing high-quality components and systems for the thin-film coating community. The company’s products are used worldwide in a variety of academic and research applications, with the range of deposition products including component sources (nanoparticle sources, atom sources, ion sources, sputter sources and e-beam evaporators) and flexibly configured deposition systems based on its own UHV deposition components.

Dr Alistair Kean spoke at the NanoKTN’s High Performance Thin-Film Coatings conference in late 2010, presenting on the production of nanoparticle coatings for high performance structural applications. He also presented the findings from specific projects including SOLAMON, an EU FP7 funded project which is examining plasmonic light harvesting to increase the efficiency of thin film photovoltaics.

“The NanoKTN has provided us with excellent opportunities to demonstrate our technology to a relevant and receptive audience. After the latest event, we made two valuable contacts that wouldn’t have come about if it weren’t for attending and presenting at the event,” explains Dr Alistair Kean.

Kean continues, “We have worked on a number of European projects, collaborating with key partners and consortia, and a wealth of experience of working with academics. Now we want to drive more valuable commercial products, and to work with commercial partners and to apply our technology to create a new portfolio of applications and products. The NanoKTN’s events have been very good and a very useful platform to raise the profile of the company and its technology.”

The NanoKTN’s primary aim is to encourage and support organisations to collaborate and share knowledge with key partners in attractive end user markets to achieve growth of the UK nanotechnology sector. One of the key methods to ensure networking between key market players is to facilitate interactions through networking and event organisation.

Dr Alec Reader, Director at the NanoKTN adds, “At the NanoKTN, we have found our events to be hugely beneficial to a large number of companies and organisations, working in a variety of different markets. It has been a pleasure to work with Mantis Deposition and assist them in building their business contacts and commercial profile. It is great to see the success they have had and we look forward to working with them closely in the future.”
