Imagination Technologies, a leading multimedia chip technologies company, is demonstrating two of Imagination's latest ENSIGMA UCCP310 IP platforms running real time Wi-Fi and ATSC integrated on an advanced SoC test chip at MWC 2010 in Barcelona (15-18 February 2010).
/> UCCP310 delivers a growing suite of standards required for mobile multimedia reception including all major TV, digital and FM radio and mobile TV standards, plus 802.11 a/b/g Wi-Fi connectivity to enable the most comprehensive fully programmable broadcast and communications functionality in mobile and embedded electronics products. Imagination is showing not only the broad range of standards supported by UCCP310, but also the benefits of integrating multiple programmable baseband communications engines on next generation mobile SoCs.

Tony King-Smith, VP marketing, Imagination says: In most solutions available today communications functionality for everything other than the cellular modem continues to remain in chips separate from the applications processor. We believe it's time for communications to be integrated onto advanced application processor SoCs just as we've seen happening for graphics and video acceleration. UCCP310 is the only multi-standard communications IP core available in the market today that is up to the task. It delivers both 802.11 a/b/g Wi-Fi connectivity, and a broad suite of demodulators required for digital TV broadcasts worldwide, now including ATSC, in a single programmable IP platform suitable for low-power mobile deployment.

The ENSIGMA UCCP 310 is a key component in Imagination's recently announced Connected Processor strategy which will deliver a family of ultra small META processors with integrated connectivity for mobile and highly embedded applications.

The ENSIGMA UCCP310 platform is designed to support the ever increasing number of standards for communications in a proven, highly-efficient and extraordinarily flexible programmable solution. It delivers multi-standard demodulation support for the 802.11a/b/g family of Wi-Fi standards, class-leading support for digital TV (ATSC (8VSB), Nordig Unified 2.0 DVB-T, 13-seg ISDB-T, mobile TV (DVB-H, T-DMB, 1-seg ISDB-T) and digital radio reception (ISDB-Tmm, ISDB-Tsb, DAB, DAB+, DMB-R and FM with RDS).

Continues King-Smith: The programmability of the UCCP Series3 architecture means that our partners can also implement their own algorithms, enabling them to exploit their knowledge of communications standards while also making the next major leap in SoC integration. With many more connectivity and broadcast standards under development, and the ability to integrate multiple communications engines on next generation mobile and embedded SoCs, we believe UCC Series3 based radios will set the pace for next generation connectivity in mobile phones.

UCC Series3, the third generation of the architecture at the heart of the ENSIGMA UCCP multi-standard programmable communications IP platform family delivers market-leading performance for every standard available, while offering a fully programmable ultra low power solution in small silicon area.

Other key features include support for multiple UCC engines, diversity, execution of multiple standards simultaneously on a single UCC engine, and expansion bus options.

Within the UCCP310 platform, UCC Series3's programmable radio technology provides physical layer demodulation and modulation. A dedicated 32-bit METAT processor performs system housekeeping, manages data-link processing for high bandwidth standards such as DVB-H and 802.11a/b/g, and distributes data using the platform's own DMA controller.

The ENSIGMA UCCP310 IP platform is available for licensing now.
