EU Commission welcomed on the accelerated introduction of C-ITS
C-ITS or co-operative Intelligent Transport Systems have become an important strategic pillar of the EU's modernisation strategy for its transport sector to achieve the goal of zero fatalities by 2050. At the heart of C-ITS is V2X (Vehicle-to-Everything) communication, which enables vehicles and transport infrastructure to talk to each other via high-reliability and low-latency wireless communication technologies.
On 13 March 2019, the European Commission adopted new rules on the framework, which will enable the deployment of co-operative intelligent transport systems on EU roads and modernise the European mobility sector. In doing so, it set a regulatory framework that would enable a large-scale deployment of ETSI ITS G5-based systems while providing clear guidelines for interoperability and coexistence for other future technologies.
At u-blox, it welcomes the decision of the European Commission as it ends the climate of uncertainty that has long hampered the widespread use of V2X technology both in vehicles and on roads. It continues to support the development and delivery of V2X technologies to improve road safety and innovative ways of coexisting between ITS-G5, existing alternatives and future technologies within standardization organisations such as ETSI and CEN.
Ultimately, all of these technologies will be fundamental to achieving the vision of autonomous driving and reducing road traffic accidents. The increased transparency provided by this decision will help accelerate the introduction of V2X technology in one of the largest markets in the world. At u-blox, products are already available that support ITS-G5 , the EU's choice.
