embedded world has been the most important event in the international exhibition calendar for both exhibitors and visitors for a decade. For example, nine out of ten exhibitors at embedded world 2012 confirm that the event is of great or exceptional importance for their marketing and sales activities.

Safety and security are two of the top themes at the embedded world Conference 2013. These themes apply to the whole conference with its varied segments. Reason enough to also use this as the motto for the keynote. Stuart McClure can answer questions on the security of technical systems better than almost anyone else. He is regarded worldwide as one of the experts and visionaries in the field of information system security.

In his keynote on ‘Securing Invisible Things’ he will examine the questions: Why aren’t our information systems secure? How could this happen? What can we do to avert the next cyber catastrophe? And how can the ‘bad guys’, as McClure calls them, be stopped? The keynote takes place at 11:00 on 26 February 2013, in Shanghai hall, NCC Ost. Admission is free for all participants and visitors at embedded world.

Safety, security and ultra-low power

The Steering Board of international experts has assessed the many papers submitted and assembled a top-class conference programme, which is intended primarily for embedded hardware and software developers. It presents proposals for solutions to current and future challenges.

Best example: ‘Ultra-low power’ is another key issue in addition to safety and security and will be examined from numerous different angles. The conference starts with a session that describes the principles of ultra-low power solutions. This clarifies what ULP is and how the targets can be achieved with the lowest possible energy input and the longest possible operating times. Simply putting the microcontroller into sleep mode has no longer been sufficient for a long time. To examine the topic in greater depth, the second day of the conference offers participants the opportunity to hear, understand and test everything mentioned above in the ‘Ultra-low Power System Design Workshop’. Well-known companies face the participants’ questions in this full-day hands-on workshop and prove their ULP expertise in presentations and prepared practical exercises. Particularly interesting is the opportunity for the participants themselves to try out the products of five different manufacturers on one day and make direct comparisons.

The third day of the event offers more highly interesting and in-depth technical presentations and experience reports on ‘Ultra-low Energy Applications and Systems’.

Focus on innovations: the electronic displays Conference 2013

The electronic displays Conference is one of the most important information and opinion platforms for developers, researchers, users and decision-makers.

The highlights in 2013 are the sessions on Touch Screens and Automotive Displays and practical presentations on E-Signage and Display Market Data round off the programme. The participants can also look forward to a variety of keynotes in 2013. “The eight keynotes cover the whole innovative segment of electronic displays – from OLEDs and TFTs to touch and flexible displays. This will be specifically presented for distribution and applications like Automotive and E-Signage,” says Prof. Dr. Karlheinz Blankenbach, Pforzheim University of Applied Sciences, Chairman of the Conference Committee.

For example, Gildas Sorin, Chief Executive Officer of Novaled AG, speaks on the rapid spread of OLED displays. The services of Prof. Dr.-Ing. Norbert Frühauf of Stuttgart University have also been obtained – he gives a keynote on ‘Assessment and Perspective of Active Matrix Display Processes’. Michael Heimrath, Head of Display Development at BMW, also speaks on ‘Driver Assistance Influences Car Displays’. Besides the above-mentioned keynotes, there are a variety of other sessions, in which themes like TFT LCDs, Display Interfacing and Driving, Measurement, OLEDs & E-Paper and E-Signage are discussed.

But knowledge transfer is not just confined to the lectures. The established author interviews after every session provide an excellent opportunity for discussions in small groups – the almost 50 interviews this time is even a record.

As in the past years, there is a special highlight for students: The ‘German Flat Display Forum (DFF) Student Paper Award’ is presented to the best bachelor’s or master’s thesis on electronic displays.
