Initiated by RivieraWaves and CSEM, the European funded BLIM4SME project launched last month with the aim of developing miniature wireless modules targeting healthcare and lifestyle applications using Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE). This is in response to the consortium's view that wireless sensors enabled with BLE are experiencing strong market interest.

Wireless sensors in healthcare and lifestyle applications require radio links which have to fulfill several stringent requirements, including: standardized connectivity for plug-and-play interconnection with other devices; portability with tiny modules for maximum comfort for the wearer; low power consumption for long autonomy; and flexibility for being embedded with a heterogeneous set of other components like sensors, signal processors, energy harvesters.

The BLIM4SME project will embrace thses challenges and develop a low power Bluetooth Smart module suited for healthcare and lifestyle applications. The resulting module will be targeted at EU SMEs and industries requiring highly integrated and low power BLE radios for next generation bio-medical, healthcare, sports and fitness products. This project will also develop RF IP blocks which will be embedded into a single “antenna-and-radio” module with innovative “integrated passive devices” technology.

The consortium is comprised of research partners and SMEs with the expertise to bring this project to life. They include: RTD Talos (Cyprus), coordinator of the project; RivieraWaves (France), SME participant and expert in BLE protocol; Prisma Electronics (Greece), SME participant and expert in modules; Nordic Components (Finland), SME participant and expert in IPD modules; VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland (Finland), research performer and expert in IPD technology; and CSEM (Swiss Center for Electronics and Microtechnology) (Switzerland), research performer and expert in low power integrated radios.

The BLIM4SME project is partly funded by the European Union’s Seventh Framework Program, managed by the Research Executive Agency under Grant Agreement No. 605264.
