Cherry wins automotive lean manufacturing accolade for its production efficiency
Cherry Electrical Products was awarded the Automotive Lean Manufacturing Award in Germany last month for its successful implementation of an efficient production system. The award, presented by the German trade journal Automobil-Produktion, rewards businesses that employ lean processes to combine cost efficiency and quality in production, based on the Toyota Production System. This philosophy allowed Toyota to greatly reduce lead time and cost while improving quality at the same time, enabling it to become one of the ten largest companies in the world. It comprises the slimming down of production by removing waste, increasing efficiency and continuous improvement.
SaysCherry has implemented a production system based on five principles: demand-driven production, continuous improvement, process-oriented working structures, innovative manufacturing technologies and a balanced ratio of managers to employees. In order to eliminate unnecessary working practices, the company tightly controls the production and business processes along the supply chain. The system outlines the most important processes and principles to provide the basis for company-wide standards for increased transparency and efficiency. This has allowed Cherry to achieve maximum use of its production facilities for up to 360 days a year, and an average annual increase in productivity of 6 per cent.
