As part of Boulting’s Grow Your Own Talent training and development scheme, the company is already benefiting from a Masters Graduate training programme. Three graduates are nearing the end of a two year part-time MSc qualification in Industrial Communication and Automation.

The company has sponsored the postgraduate course at Manchester Metropolitan University for three young technology engineers. The sponsorship is part of the continuous development programme and investment in the engineers of the future, a key part of the company’s expanding business.

The course has honed the graduates’ expertise in areas such as power electronics, PROFINET, PROFIBUS together with Integrated Management Systems, Communications, Electronics and Embedded Systems Design.

Graduates Nick Mullis, Tom Oliver and Dean Wood started their academia with a range of undergraduate study, from music technology, computing to engineering. The post graduate study has cemented their practical and electrical knowledge providing a high skill set which Boulting Technology and its clients have already benefited from.

Boulting’s’ graduate scheme has meant these young engineers are now confident in their capability of developing and delivering projects to specification, providing customer satisfaction individually and as part of a team.

“By combining a mentoring scheme utilising experienced engineers, together with on the job experience to support the learning modules, the graduates have been able to make a positive contribution to the success of the projects whilst gaining valuable experience,” explained Gordon Mullis, Managing Director, Boulting Technology.

“The mentors have really given us the confidence to implement the practical aspects of the course, as well as gaining first-hand experience in interacting with customers professionally and technically,” said Dean Wood. “We have been able to benefit from not only the academic aspects of the course but also the high level of technical expertise and experience our colleagues bring working with PLC and SCADA systems.”

Recent business successes means that Boulting is well placed to continue to invest in its staff, both in terms of numbers of employees and ensuring that the skill mix is right not only for today, but for the future health of the company.

This is just one of the schemes the company has adopted in the last few years. Michelle Stott, HR Manager, Boulting commented: “We have been working hard to grow our own talent in recent years. For example, alongside our established apprentice schemes and graduate schemes we are now able to offer a one year work experience placement. We have been working with Liverpool John Moores University, Manchester Metropolitan University and the Institution of Engineering and Technology to attract undergraduates to Boulting. Also we have been busy attending ECITB career fairs to attract school and college leavers to the business."

“In addition, the business has needed to fill the gap for our scarce skill opportunities. We are now a sponsor company able to attract experienced staff from outside the UK and EU,” added Stott. “The investment is continuing with structured learning and development plans across the whole business. We are excited to be planning for the future and are preparing to double the intake for all our schemes.”
