A leading original equipment manufacturer (OEM) of medical systems and devices has awarded BEAR Power Supplies a contract to design and manufacture a custom medical power supply for a clinical system. The system enables a physician to remotely adjust an implanted medical device during an office visit, eliminating the need for additional surgery to maintain optimal performance of the device as a patient’s condition changes.
According to Michael Allen, president of BEAR Power Supplies, the custom 500 Watt AC/DC power supply will significantly reduce the OEM’s system costs. It will also greatly improve reliability of the system, especially in markets outside the USA, by improving handling of different countries’ line voltages.

Allen cited three areas where BEAR offered unique benefits to the OEM:

• BEAR design innovations including one that allowed the OEM to eliminate a system fan. This not only reduces component expense, but also enables silent operation.

• BEAR’s willingness and technical ability to incorporate the OEM’s proprietary circuitry in addition to the power supply circuitry on one board. This lets the OEM benefit from their own unique intellectual property, while taking advantage of BEAR’s expertise in power supply design, design-for-manufacturing, and cost-effective manufacturing in the USA. The result is better performance at lower cost.

• BEAR’s ability to deliver fully-custom medical power supplies at relatively low production volumes. “Unlike most power supply companies, we are very happy to design and produce custom power supplies at almost any manufacturing volume,” Allen said.
