Matthew Conway, Director of Program development at Apex Factory Automation is in Southwest Asia as part of Task Force Steel serving with 1/109th Infantry, part of the 55th Heavy Brigade Combat Team providing security in that region. Matt is a member of the Pennsylvania Army National Guard and his tour goes through 2013.
A veteran of the Marine Corps, Matt was a civilian and working in the electronics industry on September 11, 2001. He went immediately to re-enlist. Unsuccessful at returning to the Marines, he enlisted in the Pennsylvania National Guard and since then, in addition to eight activations for support in natural disasters, this will be his second tour of duty in the Middle East with them. The first of Matt’s three tours in the region was as an active member of the US Marine Corps in Desert Storm in 1991.

The second deployment was in 2008-2009, in Egypt in the Sinai Peninsula, as part of the peace keeping force with the MFO (Multinational Force and Observers).

“The industry and the companies I have worked for while I have been in the PA Army National Guard have been very supportive,” explained Staff Sergeant Conway. “At times I have been unavailable due to training or state-activation and the customers have been very understanding and patient. It’s also a challenge for the organizations I work for, especially while being in a role where we need to communicate freely with customers and prospects. I believe people feel it is for a greater good and generally are willing to accept a missed call or a meeting date slipping from time to time.”
