Analog Devices has announced that it will demonstrate DVB-H receiver technology running on the Blackfin processor at the IBC conference, in Amsterdam, September 7-11. Working with SIDSA, a provider of broadband access semiconductors and Digital TV systems, the technology demonstration will showcase Blackfin handling all software tasks in a SIDSA-DVB-H module.
The demonstration at IBC highlights ADI’s embedded/digital signal processing technology showing how the deployment of a Blackfin-based DVB-H receiver, can rapidly enable multimedia functions such as audio/video playback and photo viewing in portable media player (PMP) designs.

“ADI Blackfin provides a solution that will enable fast and easy deployment of DVB-H technology for a variety of PMP designs,” said Mike Haidar, Product Line Director, General Purpose DSP, Analog Devices, Inc. “The demonstration in conjunction with SIDSA, highlights how accessories such as the DVB-H plug-in receiver adds value for PMP designs, opening the door for new products concepts, such as add on DVB-H modules in automotives car entertainment and navigation systems.”

The various tasks required for the DVB-H application for the demonstration are handled by the Blackfin ADSP-BF533 processor in software including the H.264 decoder (up to 30fps, CIF resolution), HE-AAC decoder, TCP/IP Networking stack with BSD socket interface, User Interface, Control Application, DVB-H streaming modules namely, RTP, RTCP, and IGMP. Additional Blackfin drivers are used for the LCD display, audio, SDIO module, keypad and DVB-H module specific software like, channel, service information and module status etc.

“As a leading provider of DVB-H technology, SIDSA's module enables fast and simple integration of Mobile TV. This key technology combines the best performance and power consumption with our Analog Devices processor,” said Federico Ruiz, VP Technical Manager, SIDSA.

Analog Devices’ Blackfin embodies a new breed of 16/32-bit embedded processor with the industry’s highest performance and power efficiency for applications where a convergence of capabilities multi-format audio, video, voice, and image processing; multi-mode baseband and packet processing; and real-time security and control processing are critical. It is this powerful combination of software flexibility and scalability that has gained Blackfin widespread adoption in convergent applications such as digital home entertainment, networked and streaming media, automotive telematics and infotainment, and digital radio and mobile TV.
