Altium has added the University of Applied Sciences at Fachhochschule Deggendorf in Bavaria to its worldwide electronic engineering student development programme. Altium is providing the new development lab at FH Deggendorf with sponsorship of Altium Designer unified licenses, and full support, totalling a value of over 190,000 euros. Students at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Media Technology will use Altium Designer’s unified design environment and learn how to easily take a design from concept to manufacture through software design, programmable hardware design and board design all within a single system.
Altium Designer’s unified electronics design environment removes the barriers between traditional disparate design flows in electronics design, bringing together the design of hardware, programmable hardware and embedded software. Students will be able to gain experience in harnessing the potential of programmable hardware and systems on FPGA design, easily allowing them to embrace 'soft' design methodology without the need to acquire specialist programmable device expertise. The unified design environment will also let them manage their design projects effectively, including being able to re-use design elements.

For commercial organizations, this provides companies with increased design flexibility, reduced production costs and speeds time to market. Altium Designer also delivers the freedom to move between any device, from any vendor, at any time using a common interface and lowers total cost of ownership by eliminating the need to integrate extra-cost add-ons to increase functionality, or make up a complete solution.

The University of Applied Sciences at FH Deggendorf has about 3,000 students who are enrolled in four faculties. Teaching focuses on economics and engineering. Professor Dr. Nikolas Müller, who is responsible for the systems engineering department, opted for Altium Designer to ensure students gain experience in the future of electronics design, in particular in the trend towards unifying the roles of board design and software design. “We are very lucky to have access to the powerful Altium Designer tools in our university. This will improve both our possibilities in education and the skills of the students who qualify from our university,” commented Müller.

In addition to working with FH Deggendorf, Altium supports a range of other universities in Germany and throughout Europe. Existing German partnerships include FH Amberg/Weiden and FH Aachen. Examples of European co-operations include the University of Hertfordshire, UK, and the University of Skövde, Sweden. Elsewhere in the world, Altium sponsors over 900 universities, research projects and student competitions including The University of Toronto, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a large number of universities in Australia, China and the broader Asia-Pacific region.
