Joining the Embedded Vision Alliance (EVA), Altera will provide the computer vision industry group with insights on programmable logic technologies enabling designers to use FPGAs, SoCs, IP and design tools for embedded vision applications in the industrial, surveillance, automotive, military, broadcasting and consumer sectors.

Altera FPGAs increase flexibility and performance across various embedded vision applications, such as image sensor interface, image signal processing, compression, transmission and video content analytics. The device's parallel architecture accelerates vision processing algorithms. Altera also offer the Altera SDK for OpenCL design tool, which eases implementations of parallel processing applications onto FPGAs. The company's hard floating point DSP blocks offer superior GFLOPS/W capability and facilitate native floating point support, reducing development time by 6-12 months.

Enabling designers to achieve higher performance in their products with hardware acceleration, the Altera FPGAs support a variety of sensor interfaces, compression standards, transmission protocols and custom video analytics. Multiple devices (such as CPUs, DSPs and ASSPs) can be integrated into one FPGA, reducing board space, power consumption and design complexity.

Jeff Bier, Founder, Embedded Vision Alliance, commented: “Embedded vision allows machines to see and understand the world around them, enabling them to be more responsive, safer and more capable. Altera is an innovator in technologies that enable engineers to incorporate visual intelligence into their product designs. I welcome Altera to the Embedded Vision Alliance, and look forward to collaborating to advance the Alliance’s goal of empowering product creators to use embedded vision technology.”
