Asahi Kasei Microdevices (AKM) has opened its new "AKM Co-creation & Technology Centre" in Yokohama City, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan, in June 2024.

This facility brings together AKM's key functions in product design, semiconductor and sensor R&D, and partner collaborations under one roof.

Asahi Kasei has identified digital solutions as a critical growth area within its materials sector, capitalising on its strengths in electronic components and materials. AKM plays a vital role by offering solutions in fields such as current sensing, audio, and camera controls for mobile devices.

“AKM is committed to pushing the boundaries of human experience through pioneering ideas that integrate technology and drive innovation. The newly established center embodies our commitment to meeting customer needs, developing solutions, and delivering impactful outcomes through focused efforts," said Hideyuki Shinomiya, President of AKM.

The AKM Co-creation & Technology Centre consolidates operations previously located in Tokyo and Kanagawa, aiming to accelerate the development of new solutions, create additional value for clients across various industries, and enhance collaboration with external partners to swiftly address market challenges.

Key features of the AKM Co-creation & Technology Centre

The centre will feature a unique visitor area with a collaboration space, designed to engage with customers and partners. A Proof of Concept (PoC) demonstration area will showcase AKM’s latest technological advancements, offering an immersive experience that highlights how these innovations integrate into everyday life. The demonstration spaces, modelled on common living environments such as a living room and bedroom, allow visitors to experience AKM’s technologies first-hand, a feature previously only available at trade shows or specific events.

Additionally, the centre includes an audio room designed for visitors to experience AKM’s "VELVET SOUND" audio solutions, which aim to deliver an "as if you were there" sound experience. Visitors will have the opportunity to listen to the latest D/A converters (DACs) and participate in product evaluation, contributing to the ongoing refinement of AKM’s audio offerings. This space will also serve as a collaborative hub for audio equipment manufacturers and partners to develop cutting-edge sound solutions.

The centre also houses a demonstration vehicle area, allowing visitors to explore AKM's automotive technologies. Demo cars will feature innovations such as "VELVET SOUND for Cars," Active Road Noise Cancellation (ARNC) for quieter high-speed driving, hands-free communication systems, and In-Car Communication (ICC) for clear communication in larger vehicles. Additionally, the vehicles will be equipped with Engine Sound Creator, a solution that simulates engine sounds in electric vehicles (EVs), offering users a more familiar driving experience.
