AI integration in Windows PCs: Microsoft introduces new Copilot key
As we step into 2024, Microsoft is set to redefine personal computing with the introduction of the Copilot key to Windows 11 PCs, marking the start of a pivotal year for AI-powered computing.
This innovative feature heralds a new era where artificial intelligence is intricately integrated into every aspect of Windows, from the system and silicon to the hardware. This integration aims to both simplify and amplify users' computing experiences, making 2024 a landmark year for the AI-powered PC.
Microsoft's Copilot is an AI companion which has changed various aspects of technology usage, from a new approach to searching with Copilot in Bing, to enhanced productivity with Copilot for Microsoft 365, and now to a more intuitive PC experience with Copilot in Windows.
Microsoft's collaboration with silicon giants like AMD, Intel, and Qualcomm has been pivotal. These partners have unveiled their latest AI-capable silicon innovations, which are crucial for unlocking new AI experiences on Windows PCs. The convergence of GPU, CPU, NPU, and Cloud technologies underpins these advancements, setting the stage for a new wave of Windows AI experiences.
The introduction of the Copilot key is a significant milestone, representing the first major change to the Windows PC keyboard in almost three decades. This new key, alongside the familiar Windows key, is designed to make AI interaction more accessible. Pressing the Copilot key will activate the Copilot in Windows experience, seamlessly integrating AI assistance into daily tasks. This development is seen as a transformative moment in the history of Windows, positioning Copilot as a gateway to AI on the PC.
In the lead-up to CES and beyond, many new Windows 11 PCs from various ecosystem partners will feature the Copilot key, with availability expected from late February through Spring. This includes upcoming models of Microsoft's own Surface devices.
Note: The availability of the Copilot feature may vary by market and device. It requires a Microsoft account for access. In cases where Copilot for Windows is unavailable or not enabled on a device, the Copilot key will default to launching Windows Search.
