Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) has emerged as a transformative technology in a variety of industries, from autonomous vehicles to airborne mapping systems. Its ability to detect and measure distances by reflecting light off distant objects has made it invaluable in areas where precision and accuracy are paramount. However, the effectiveness of LiDAR systems hinges on their ability to detect and amplify weak light signals without introducing significant noise. The management of this noise is often the limiting factor in achieving optimal resolution and performance.

LiDAR systems typically detect faint light reflections from objects located far away, which presents a challenge in terms of signal amplification. Ensuring a high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is essential for the system to function accurately, and there are three main ways to improve SNR:

  1. Increasing the Emitted Signal: This can be achieved by using a more powerful laser or by amplifying the optical signal through methods such as a fibre amplifier.
  2. Enhancing the Detected Signal: Employing more sensitive detectors can capture weaker signals, improving the overall system response.
  3. Reducing System Noise: Rather than focusing on the signal itself, reducing the noise introduced by various system components can be more effective. Ultimately, the component with the highest noise level dictates the system’s noise floor, making it crucial to ensure all parts are optimized for SNR performance.

In this context, low-noise transimpedance amplifiers (TIAs) play a pivotal role. TIAs are essential for converting weak photocurrents into measurable voltages, and by minimizing the noise floor, these amplifiers allow the detection of even fainter signals from more distant objects. This extension of a LiDAR system’s operational range not only enhances its detection capabilities but also allows for more refined data analysis, enabling better extraction of valuable information from the acquired signals. In real-world applications, this could be the critical factor that allows an autonomous vehicle to detect a small obstacle in its path, potentially preventing an accident.

LASER COMPONENTS provides a broad range of photodetectors, including single-photon counters, as well as transimpedance amplifiers that deliver noise levels as low as 0.2 fA/√Hz and gain up to 10^13 V/A. These high-performance components ensure that the electronics used in signal acquisition are not the limiting factor in achieving the required system performance.
