Toshiba Electronics micro combines ARM Cortex-M3 with 2MByte Flash

Toshiba Electronics has launched a 32-bit microcontroller that combines a high speed ARM Cortex™-M3 core with 2MBytes of onboard Flash memory. The TMPM360 is ideal for industrial and digital consumer applications where high-performance, low-power operation, high-capacity data storage and a large number of serial interfaces must be delivered with minimum component count.
From large data tables to multi-language support, there is a growing demand for modern consumer products to store high volumes of application data. In many cases the high-capacity Flash ROM integrated into the new Toshiba microcontroller will allow designers to rapidly address this requirement without the need for additional memory components. A large 128Kbytes of onboard RAM supports further component count reduction. For applications that do require additional storage, a static memory controller (SMC) with a 16-bit external data bus can address up to 16Mbytes of off-chip memory. An integrated Direct Memory Access Controller (DMAC) allows data to be transferred between internal and external memories.

The new microcontroller combines extensive connectivity in the form of a 16-channel general purpose serial I/O (SIO) configurable for synchronous mode or up to 12 UARTs; a 5-channel serial bus interface (SBI) offering either I2C or synchronous operation; and a synchronous serial bus interface (SSP) that supports SPI, SSI and Microwire formats. A total of 104 pins can be configured for input/output, with a further 16 pins offering input only.

Designed to simplify applications that require remote control functionality, the new Toshiba microcontroller incorporates a consumer electronics control (CEC) unit and a remote control signal pre-processor (RMC). Other on-chip peripherals include a 10-bit, high-speed ADC, real time clock (RTC), watchdog Timer (WDT) and a 16 channel 16-bit timer. The TMP360F20FG is supplied in a 144-pin 20mm x 20mm LQFP package and can operate at frequencies up to 64MHz at temperatures from -20°C to +85°C with power supplies of between 2.7V and 3.6V. ‘Idle’, ‘sleep’ and ‘stop’ standby modes ensure optimum power efficiency.

Pin compatible devices with CAN and USB are under development and a small Starter Kit is available from Toshiba for this new product family.
