Renesas launches new R8C Family MCUs
Renesas Technology Europe today announced a new generation of R8C Family microcontrollers (MCUs) that are based on the latest process technology tailored for high performance 8 bit applications. Built on a powerful 16-bit CPU core*, the R8C/3x MCUs with on-chip flash have an extended operating voltage range of 1.8V to 5.5V. They incorporate new and enhanced analogue functions, including level-only-sensitive power-on reset circuits, high speed digital-to-analogue converters and analogue comparators. In addition, their overall performance has been boosted by the addition of a data transfer controller (DTC) and a background operation (BGO) function for flash memory rewriting.
There are two different product families available: R8C/3xC with advanced features, and the R8C/3xD for applications with reduced peripheral requirements.
The broad memory offering from 4kB (R8C/32C, R8C/32D) to 128kB (R8C/38C) and the package availability from 20 to 80 pin offer product designers increased flexibility and choice. An ultra thin QFN package (0.8mm) is also available with the 24 pin R8C/3GC and 36 pin R8C/3JC. All of the new MCUs maintain compatibility with existing R8C products, allowing customers to add new features to their current products quickly and reduce time to market. Primary applications for the new devices include home appliances, sensor networks, power management equipment and building automation products.
The new devices within the R8C Family of MCUs have features that allow engineers to design smarter, lower power and more reliable systems at lower cost. In recent years, the R8C Family has established itself as a high-performance solution for 8-bit applications. The new R8C/3x has higher performance due to the integrated data transfer controller (DTC) for efficient data movement and a background operation (BGO) function for flash rewrite operations without CPU intervention. These specialized hardware blocks manage complex operations automatically, freeing up the CPU to execute extra functions and enabling end systems that are more feature-rich and robust.
The new R8C Family devices incorporate the enhanced features in devices as small as 20 pins with 4KB of flash memory. Customers can use them to expand features for any application without impacting cost.
