SD and Micro SD memory cards meet demanding applications
Thanks to the Swissbit firmware translation layer architecture (FTL) – claimed to be the world’s first implementation of a sub-page based firmware on SD cards – the new S-45 family offers several key features that cannot normally co-exist in one SD/Micro SD card: cost competitiveness, extended endurance, increased retention time, elimination of read disturb and high sustained random write performance for small data size operations as well as power fail safety.
Both the S-45 (SD) and the S-45u (Micro SD) are available at distributor Rutronik as of now.
The sub-page based FTL reduces the internal management unit size by factors and speeds up the processing of small sector writes.
With this FTL architecture, the S-45 family offers a data rate for small sector random writes on average 50 to 100 times higher than comparable cards. This significantly accelerates the operation of embedded applications.
Together with this increase in random write performance comes a reduction of the WAF in the same magnitude. Users benefit from an endurance of the MLC flash that comes close to today’s SLC cards.
The S-45 (SD card with densities from 4GB up to 64GB) and S-45u (Micro SD with densities from 4GB up to 16GB) comply with UHS-I bus mode, up to speed class 10 and offer a sequential data rate with close to 38MB/s.
They come with an intelligent read disturb management (RDM) alongside an autonomous, performance-neutral background “auto refresh” process. This data care management extends the data reliability especially in read intensive applications.
Thanks to the sub-page based management, the busy time stays below the spec limit, allowing a high sustained IOPS rate and guaranteeing compatibility with the most widespread industrial and networking SD applications. Transaction log based firmware enables power fail safety.
The S-45 family’s diagnostic functions offer highly detailed status information as well as standalone data maintenance guaranteeing data retention for many years, even in especially rough environmental conditions and under extreme temperatures.
An extended operating life in the field combined with long data reliability results in shortest possible downtimes. The high-performance controller offers the best ECC (error correction code) on the market.
The SD cards are ideal for read intensive applications as well as a wide variety of industrial and networking general purpose usage.
