OpenAI has announced Mira Murati, its Chief Technology Officer, as the interim CEO following Sam Altman's departure from his CEO and board member roles.

Mira has been an integral part of OpenAI's leadership for five years, contributing to its stature as a global AI entity. Her extensive involvement in research, product development, and safety, along with a deep understanding of AI governance and policy, positions her ideally for the interim role as the board searches for a permanent CEO.

The board's decision for Mr. Altman's departure followed a comprehensive review process, which highlighted concerns regarding his consistent candidness in communications. This issue ultimately led to a loss of confidence in his ability to lead.

In their statement, the board said: "OpenAI was deliberately structured to advance our mission: to ensure that artificial general intelligence benefits all humanity. The board remains fully committed to serving this mission. We are grateful for Sam’s many contributions to the founding and growth of OpenAI. At the same time, we believe new leadership is necessary as we move forward. As the leader of the company’s research, product, and safety functions, Mira is exceptionally qualified to step into the role of interim CEO. We have the utmost confidence in her ability to lead OpenAI during this transition period.”
