The WiBE (Wireless Broadband Enabler) is a device to deliver broadband to rural areas that are far from the phone exchange. Like a 3G dongle it connects to the 3G mobile network to create a web hotspot. But has 30 times the throughput and five times the range of the dongle.

Users connect tablets, PCs and mobile phones to the device by WiFi.

The additional three winners were:
Input Dynamics: Acoustic user interface called TouchDevice. The software gives runs on non-touchscreen mobile handsets and gives touchscreen functionality using input from the microphone to determine where on the handset a user has tapped.

Masabi: Secure, user-friendly mobile ticketing software for any mobile phone. The non-web based application is being trialled by several UK train networks to cut queues and sends a two-dimensional bar code e-ticket to the phone.

Private Planet: Personal cloud computing technology that gives each user their own personal online space and aims to improve device interoperability and security. It was developed in collaboration with organisations including Imperial College London, BT, O2, and Transport for London.
