A house isn't a home without a robot dog
Despite being sold off by Alphabet, Boston Dynamics will continue with its development of quadrupedal robots. A preview of its upgraded SpotMini robot has been released, showing a robust chassis and sensor housing with a black and yellow colour scheme. In the video, the SpotMini's agile movement is visible, with its angular legs letting the robot jump around and perform a fast turn around a wall.
The robot has been designed for use in the office, home and outdoors. The SpotMini was originally designed to climb stairs. It is also able to pick up and handle objects when combined with a 5kg arm.
The teaser trailer of Boston Dynamics' upgraded robot is the first development announcement the company has made since Softbank acquired it from Google's parent company Alphabet back in June.
The business was on sale after it failed to meet attempts to fulfil US military contracts. Of the range of robots that Boston Dynamics has built, including Big Dog, the SpotMini is the most likely to be able to meet the criteria for a contract in the future. This is due to the fact that it is the quietest robot to have been developed so far, because it is all-electric, with no hydraulic parts.
Boston Dynamics claims it can run for about 90 minutes on a charge. Boston Dynamics announced that the SpotMini is "coming soon".
