Digital thread sewn by test bed
Researchers at US Commerce Department's National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) have launched a Smart Manufacturing Systems (SMS) Test Bed. An innovative model factory, the test bed will facilitate the advanced manufacturing technology known as the 'digital thread' and help manufacturers cut costs, shorten production time, reduce errors and provide higher quality goods.
4D imaging lowers risk of stroke
The most common form of cardiac arrhythmia is atrial fibrillation, which affects 33.5 million patients worldwide. As if having an irregular heartbeat wasn't troubling enough, patients with atrial fibrillation are also much more likely to have a stroke.
Low Power AFE enables lighter wearable health devices
Analog Devices announced a low power, next-gen biopotential analog front end (AFE) which enables smaller, lighter, and less obtrusive cardiac monitoring devices with longer battery life. The AD8233 AFE is a fully integrated, single-lead electrocardiogram (ECG) front end designed in one compact, easy-to-use component. Typically, developers need to design ECG front ends from individual components, which can add incremental cost and design time.
Monitoring Parkinson’s symptoms at home
Parkinson’s disease is the second most common neurodegenerative disorder in the developed world, with around 60,000 people diagnosed in the U.S. each year. Although there is no cure for the disease, there are treatments that can reduce the severity of a patient’s symptoms. But for these treatments to be effective, clinicians need a method to regularly monitor the patient’s symptoms in the home.
Predictive analytics software tackles no-show patients
A means to address the problem of no-show patients has been developed by Intermedix using Dataiku Data Science Studio (DSS), the all-in-one predictive analytics and data science platform. The problem of patients missing scheduled appointments costs the healthcare industry billions of dollars of lost revenue each year.

Pain management market continues to grow
It's estimated that 20% of adults are suffering from pain globally and consumers’ choice for at-home treated pain relief has expanded from analgesics to a combination of devices that were once found only in doctors’ or physical therapists’ offices. According to Kline’s recently published Pain Management Devices: Global Market Analysis and Opportunities report series, the consumer market for these devices has grown at a rat...
LCD drivers enhance healthcare monitoring devices
A range of low-power 16-bit microcontrollers (MCUs) has been announced by Renesas Electronics. The RL78/L1A Group microcontrollers have LCD drivers that are ideal for battery-powered sensing devices used in healthcare applications such as blood glucose monitors, lactate analysers, cholesterol analysers, and other devices equipped with biochemical sensors.
