Is polymer research the answer to plastic substitutes?
From paper straws and cotton bags to paper composite drinks cartons and glass bottles, environmental concerns have driven several changes in the food and packaging industry, in recent years. Many of these shifts have emerged as a knee-jerk reaction to consumer anti-plastic sentiment, but these abrupt alterations are not as environmentally-sound as they might first appear. Here, Dr Ashlee Jahnke, Research Director of biodegradable bioplastics...
US steps up export regulations again
In their forecasts at the end of last year Leadership Group members of the Electronic Components Supply Network (ecsn) and International Distributors of Electronics Association (IDEA) predicted that our industry might have to contend with a number of fairly major political upheavals in 2020, as the US steps up export regulations again. Many these upheavals could seriously restrict growth in the global electronic components markets,
Three emerging technologies changing data centres
Data centres are expected to use 20% of the word’s energy by 2025. While companies across the world depend on them to store data, there are new technologies that can improve their energy efficiency and operational effectiveness, if we take advantage of them.
Imperva research finds early signs of traffic recovery

Here, David Messant, Production Manager at standard components specialist norelem, has explored how standard components can be used to implement digital, supply chain and robotics solutions to minimise downtime and maximise productivity.
Li-ion batteries: where is the technology going?
This webinar, presented by IDTechEx Technology Analyst Dr Alex Holland, will provide an introduction to the key technological developments occurring within the Li-ion market, focussing on the anode and cathode.
Key applications for image sensing
As technology is playing an increasingly integral role across all industries, the potential applications for image sensing are becoming broader. Here, Mark Patrick of Mouser Electronics explores.
Opportunities beckon for agile manufacturing
Electronics manufacturers that have the ability to adapt to complex and challenging market conditions are most likely to benefit from a rising demand for electronic components such as sensors. Dave Cleal, Technical Director of Offshore Electronics explains the benefits of agile manufacturing.
Challenging year ahead for the UK connector industry
It has taken just a little under three months to turn what had the real potential to be a positive 2020 for the UK connector industry into one that has shaken every business to the core. The shutdown in China, for example, has had a significant effect on the supply chain while the dramatic changes in commodity prices will have an obvious impact on materials and manufacturing as well as incoming costs and outgoing prices.
Profitably recovering critical metals from low-grade ore
Critical metals and economically significant metals, such as cobalt and nickel, can be recovered profitably from metal refining wastes as well as ores with lower than usual concentrations. This was demonstrated by an EU project coordinated by VTT, which developed new and combined existing recovery methods.
