EEA shortlist: KYOCERA AVX
KYOCERA AVX's 9002225L0-L01 has been shortlisted for the Electronics Excellence Awards under the Passive Product category.
KYOCERA AVX’s 9002225L0-L01 is an innovative antenna that introduces a new era of Laser Direct Structuring (LDS) technology in satellite communication. This antenna is the first in the newly launched Cap Antenna Series, specifically designed to enhance high-gain and circular polarisation performance for satellite communication (SatCom) applications. Its unique shape and LDS technology allow for a 3D pattern design, offering significant advantages over traditional ceramic patch antennas.
The antenna features a compact form factor with dimensions of 35.7mm in diameter and 17.98mm in height, making it suitable for SMT assembly. Its lightweight properties and enhanced substrate materials make it an excellent alternative to conventional narrow-bandwidth and heavy ceramic patches while maintaining high-gain and circular polarisation capabilities.
Unlike ceramic patches, which suffer from gain inconsistencies, the Cap Antenna Series delivers a more constant gain and good circular polarization from the zenith to near the horizon, ensuring improved signal stability and performance.
The Cap Antenna Series includes a variety of SatCom antennas across different frequency bands, from L and S bands for 5G-NTN to multiband GNSS antennas (L1/L2/L5/L6) designed for high-precision location services. The 9002225L0-L01 model is specifically engineered to cover GNSS frequencies (1559–1610 MHz) and Iridium frequencies (1616–1626.5 MHz). One of its standout features is its pre-certification by Iridium on a 70x70mm PCB size (EVB PN L9002225L0-L01-14D), making integration seamless for developers and engineers.
Designed to be effective both on-board and on-ground (even over metal surfaces), this antenna is an ideal choice for industrial, mobility, and IoT applications. With a peak gain of approximately 2 dBi and an efficiency of 60%, it ensures reliable performance in demanding environments. The antenna exhibits Right Hand Circular Polarization (RHCP), crucial for maintaining signal integrity in satellite communications.
