ED2 announces the launch of the StingArray, the first system-in-package phased array module, which is set to change the design and manufacturing of phased array antenna systems simplifying the process, making it easier, faster, and more cost-effective.

Phased array antenna systems have traditionally been challenging to design and build due to:

  • Complex design and manufacturing: Precise engineering is required to ensure the correct operation of each element in a phased array antenna. Manufacturing these arrays involves precise alignment and integration of numerous antenna elements. ED2’s surface-mount technology (SMT) package streamlines both design and manufacturing processes.
  • Power consumption: Phased array antennas typically demand significant power, especially those with active electronic components for beamforming and steering. Traditional systems’ efficiency might range from 20% to 50%. ED2’s phased array module enhances power efficiency considerably by using very low loss materials and short trace lengths.
  • Thermal management: Phased array systems at mmWave frequencies have high power densities, which can lead to significant heat generation. Effective thermal management is crucial to maintain performance and reliability. ED2’s phased array module incorporates innovative thermal management techniques, simplifying and improving the design of larger antenna systems.
  • Integration and compatibility: Integrating phased array antennas into existing systems can be complex, requiring careful compatibility considerations. ED2’s phased array module is designed for SMT, allowing for automated assembly, higher component density, and greater design flexibility.

The StingArray represents a quantum leap forward in phased array antenna technology, addressing the key challenges of complex design, power consumption, thermal management, and integration. This innovation promises to make phased array systems more accessible and efficient for various applications.
