Vishay Intertechnology has announced the expansion of its IHPT range of solenoid-based haptic actuators, which are licensed by Immersion Corporation.

The addition of five new models introduces various sizes and force levels, catering to automotive and commercial applications such as LCD displays, touchscreens, and control panels for human-machine interfaces (HMI). These actuators, part of Vishay Custom Magnetics' offerings, operate at 12 V and deliver high-definition (HD) tactile feedback with powerful pulse and vibration capabilities.

The newly released actuators come in four sizes, ranging from 29 mm by 21 mm to 44 mm by 37 mm, with a variable force output of up to 120 N. Their compact two-piece construction, featuring mounting holes, allows for easy installation and direct force application. With a rapid response time of just 5 ms and operating voltages from 8 V to 16 V, the actuators produce clear HD haptic effects, making them ideal for harsh, noisy environments where audio cues may not suffice. Built with a robust copper and iron core, they are designed for high reliability, even at temperatures up to +105 °C.

The AEC-Q200 qualified IHPT1411AFELR73ABA is specifically designed for automotive applications such as dashboards, centre consoles, electronic gear shifts, steering wheels, and seats. Other models—IHPT1207AGELR39AB0, IHPT1710ACEL1R2AB0, IHPT1411AFELR73AB0, and IHPT1614ACEL2R7BB0—are suited for industrial automation, consumer appliances, entertainment systems, health devices, and sectors like medical, military, avionics, and studio audio equipment. However, due to licensing constraints, these actuators are not available for gaming applications.

These electromagnetic actuators operate at a nominal 12 V, eliminating the need for additional high-voltage circuitry, which reduces both cost and component height compared to other technologies like linear resonant or piezo actuators. With the inclusion of Immersion licenses, the design-in process is simplified, further cutting costs by removing the need to purchase separate licenses for complex haptic effects.

The IHPT actuators can accelerate a 0.5 kg load to 6 g using a 12 V, 5 ms pulse. Their driving coils have inductance as low as 1.8 mH, a typical DCR of 0.95 Ω, and a coil-to-core dielectric withstand voltage of 150 VDC. RoHS-compliant, halogen-free, and Vishay Green, these devices are fitted with lead terminations dipped in 100% tin solder. Vishay also offers customisation options for the actuators, including adjustments to size, shape, core material, windings, termination types, and performance to suit specific design requirements.
