Transense's SAWsense technology selected for £11 million UK EV R&D project

The project, led by Protean Electric, a global expert in in-wheel motor systems, forms part of the Power-electronics Upscale for Localisation and Sustainable Electrification (PULSE) programme. In collaboration with UK-based partners such as Unipart, Viritech, and Hypromag, the initiative aims to accelerate the development of advanced power electronics and boost UK manufacturing capabilities for the growing EV market.

As part of the project, Transense will integrate its cutting-edge SAWsense technology into Protean’s in-wheel motor systems, specifically enhancing the performance of their 800V Twinverter system. This innovation will significantly improve the efficiency and functionality of the next-generation in-wheel motors, which are critical for both light and heavy-duty electric vehicles.

The PULSE programme, running over 30 months, builds on Protean’s Gen5 in-wheel motor technology, with the goal of developing an advanced 800V Silicon Carbide (SiC) Twinverter. Additionally, the programme will focus on creating a fully integrated drive unit to meet the rising demand for high-performance EV systems in the UK and internationally.

Transense’s role in the project not only involves embedding its SAWsense technology but also scaling its supply chain and manufacturing capabilities to meet the stringent demands of the automotive sector. This collaboration positions Transense to play a key role in the market launch and future growth of Protean’s innovations.
