VARTA supports recycling app from Bower
VARTA, a European battery manufacturer, has become the primary partner for the world’s first app employing artificial intelligence (AI) to identify and recycle recyclable materials.
This innovative app is developed by the Swedish start-up Bower, established in 2019. VARTA, based in Ellwangen, Baden-Württemberg, has been involved in this project from its inception and is now aiding in the app's expansion across Europe. The AI feature is scheduled to be operational from September 2024.
"As a battery manufacturer, we bear responsibility for every step of the production process - from researching environmentally friendly materials and developing resource-saving product designs to production and recycling our own production waste. Technology offers answers to many sustainability challenges. By supporting Bower, we are sending out a clear signal in favour of promoting more sustainable technologies and the responsible use of resources. We are delighted that the use of artificial intelligence will make recycling even easier and more efficient," said Michael Ostermann, CEO of VARTA.
VARTA has backed Bower in the Nordic countries since its early days and has now extended its partnership to the Bower AI recycling app on an international scale. Both VARTA and Bower are leaders in driving high-quality, innovative solutions in significant European markets.
Mark Munz, General Manager International Sales & Marketing Consumer Batteries commented: "As a leading European battery manufacturer, it is our duty to contribute to a more sustainable future and raise awareness about battery recycling. Working with innovative technologies such as Bower helps us to fulfil this commitment."
The app allows consumers to earn bonus points and receive cashback when they return batteries. The AI solution automatically recognises VARTA batteries, making the return process quicker and simpler. By scanning products or recyclable materials with a smartphone camera, users can receive immediate information on appropriate recycling options. In Scandinavia alone, approximately 175,000 batteries have been recycled using the app to date.
In addition, Bower has benefited from a six-month Google.org Fellowship, securing a grant of €1.75 million and the support of a team of Google engineers. This cutting-edge technology enables the accurate detection of recyclable materials with an accuracy rate of 85 to 90 per cent.
"We would like to thank VARTA for their continuous support and innovative attitude, which has made it possible for Bower & VARTA together to test and develop new technologies for further engagement of consumers around battery recycling," concluded Berfin Mert, Co-Founder and COO of Bower.
