Polycarbonate solar vehicle success
Photovoltaics is now a key enabling technology for land solar vehicles and boats. The favourite type is single crystal silicon which is even viable on the sides now. On boats, it used to be protected by an acrylic sheet on either side, making it bendable when being fitted, but that has strength and weathering issues. Now, much stronger, long-life polycarbonate is taking over. For further information, see the IDTechEx report, ‘Solar Vehicles...
Solar power for crop cultivation
According to experts, growers of greenhouse crop in the US spend approximately $600m per year on electricity needed to power lighting, heating, cooling and irrigation systems. This high energy consumption and the increased awareness of the consequences of burning fossil fuels have triggered a surge in demand for solar energy as a green and sustainable alternative.
IoT network piggybacking on wind turbines
When the Port of Moerdijk had a large wind farm installed at the Southern Netherlands municipality in 2020, operated by Vattenfall, one of the European leaders in green energy, officials realised the turbine towers could serve an additional purpose: hosting an IoT network that provides key sensor data to the bustling port 120m below. Kerlink was selected to provide the gateways for the LoRaWAN project.
Ending biomass funding program sets back net zero
The Government’s planned end to the Non-Domestic Renewable Heat Incentive (NDRHI) this month will leave manufacturers without a financially viable green alternative to generate heat for many crucial industrial processes. This could force businesses to seek out cheaper, non-renewable sources of energy. Here Luke Worrall, Business Development Manager at NerG, explains why this move will harm the UK’s efforts to reach net zero carbo...
Global Recycling Day sees the launch of e-waste recycling bin
On 18th March, AST Recycling launched an e-waste recycling bin at Jackal Creek golf estate, in what will be the first of many stations nationally, to help battle the rising tide of e-waste in South Africa. In general, people want to be able to recycle e-waste, but they just don’t know where to go to deal with this fast-growing waste stream. As with other successful recycling initiatives, e-waste recycling drop-off points have to be clo...
Climate survey: silver linings for printed electronics
“We are ready to move forward,” said Stan Farnsworth, Chair of the OE-A board and Chief Marketing Officer of NovaCentrix, characterising the results of the latest OE-A Business Climate Survey.
Anglia signs deal with photovoltaic solar cell supplier
A new PCB-mounted photovoltaic solar cell line is in stock at Anglia Components following a partnership with Anysolar.
Can we expand offshore wind to reach 2030’s 40GW target?
The UK’s history is enriched with maritime activity. Surrounded by water from John o' Groats to Lands’ End, the surrounding waters have played a pivotal role in trade, travel, and most recently, electricity production. Achieving the Government’s target of generating 40 gigawatts (GW) of offshore wind power every year by 2030 will require continued investment and development in power equipment. Here, Simone Bruckner, Managing Di...
Hackathon to analyse and prevent greenhouse gas emissions
Seeq has announced that it is co-sponsoring the Microsoft Energy Core Methane Emissions Hackathon virtual event on March 1st to 8th, 2021. The objective of the hackathon is to overlay oil & gas asset and geographic information system data to pinpoint leak location, and to identify the timing and quantify of unplanned emissions.
Helping the next generation create a sustainable future
The future of solar power is burning bright. According to a report by The International Energy Agency (IEA), renewable power is set to expand by 50% between 2019 and 2024, with solar photovoltaic (PV) representing almost 60% of this expected growth. At this pivotal time for renewable energy, it is time we focused on supporting the next generation. Here, Mats W Lundberg, Head of Sustainability at Sandvik explains how Sandvik is helping y...
