Unipart Manufacturing is set to play a pivotal role in Project PULSE (Power Electronics Upscale for Localisation and Sustainable Electrification), a £11 million initiative funded by the UK government through the Advanced Propulsion Centre (APC).

Led by Protean Electric, the project brings together five industrial partners alongside two renowned academic institutions, Coventry University and Warwick Manufacturing Group (WMG). Its focus is on advancing the assembly and production of inverters and converters within the UK.

The primary aim of Project PULSE is to accelerate the development and industrialisation of cutting-edge in-wheel motor and fuel-cell technologies, addressing the rising demand in the market and enhancing the UK’s manufacturing capabilities.

Unipart, as a key consortium partner, will establish a flexible power electronics manufacturing capability at its Beresford Avenue site in Coventry. This advanced facility will facilitate the production of high-power DC-DC converters and inverters, utilising cutting-edge vision systems, flow management, and end-of-line testing to boost efficiency and quality.

By 2030, Project PULSE is expected to create or secure 159 jobs in the UK while saving 1.2 million tonnes of CO2 annually.

"This project underscores our commitment to driving innovation in the UK manufacturing sector," said Andy Davis, Business Development Director of Unipart Manufacturing.

Project PULSE will deliver a groundbreaking flexible manufacturing line, emphasising the increase of local supply chain content and integrating innovative low-carbon production methods.

The collaboration with Coventry University and WMG ensures that cutting-edge research is seamlessly incorporated into the industrialisation process, reinforcing the UK’s position as a leader in power electronics manufacturing.

Carol Rose Burke, Managing Director of Unipart Manufacturing, added: "This project is testament to the strength of domestic manufacturing and our ability to respond to industry challenges with innovative solutions.

“We're excited to contribute to an initiative that not only advances power electronics technology but also supports the UK’s journey towards sustainable electrification."

Unipart Manufacturing is involved in advanced manufacturing, supporting customers worldwide in reducing time, cost, and carbon emissions. With 800 engineering and supply chain specialists based in Coventry and Portsmouth, following the acquisition of Unipart Polymer and Composite Solutions, the company possesses unparalleled expertise in design, production, and commercialisation.

“As we embark on this exciting journey with Project PULSE, we encourage our industry partners to collaborate with us even further in pioneering a sustainable and resilient future for manufacturing," concluded Carol Rose Burke.
