Belden, a global supplier of network infrastructure and digitisation solutions, has expanded its Lumberg Automation LioN range with the introduction of the new LioN-Safety I/O Modules.

These modules are designed to enhance functional safety in industrial operations by simplifying the transmission of both safety-related and non-safety data over existing network infrastructures.

The LioN-Safety I/O Modules are compatible with the PROFIsafe protocol, with support for CIP Safety expected by the fourth quarter of 2024. Manufacturers benefit from a compact, rugged product specifically designed to manage real-time data transmission in highly automated environments. Belden’s safety solution facilitates the exchange of critical safety data and diagnostic information via existing network connections, saving valuable time, space, and resources.

Key advantages of the LioN-Safety I/O Modules include:

  • Simple integration: Safeguard workers and machinery by seamlessly integrating the modules into a PLC’s engineering tools with PROFIsafe or CIP Safety. Standardised device description files allow the transmission of safety data and diagnostics
  • Enhanced flexibility: The modules support the connection of safety inputs/outputs, non-safety I/Os, and IO-Link signals, with the ability to communicate with the cloud for additional versatility and functionality
  • High performance and safety: Suitable for PROFINET/PROFIsafe applications requiring conformance class C and Netload class III, or CIP Safety environments. The modules are TÜV Rheinland-certified up to SIL 3, Category 4, and Performance Level e (PLe)

“As industrial automation increases, the challenge – and urgency – to ensure the safety of plant workers becomes more critical,” said Jeremy Friedmar, Director of Product Management, Data Ingestion & Firewalls. “LioN-Safety I/O Modules streamline the transmission of essential safety and diagnostic information – from machine-to-machine and machine-to-human – to protect workers, as well as the machines themselves, and the overall plant environment.”

The LioN-Safety I/O Modules are built with a compact metal housing to ensure durability and reliability, even in demanding industrial sectors such as automotive manufacturing, consumer packaged goods, machine building, metals, and logistics.
