ams (formerly austriamicrosystems AG) Articles
World’s best accuracy at high rotation speeds
ams introduces a series of magnetic position sensors featuring a breakthrough technology capable of producing extremely accurate angle measurements of rotors spinning at high speed. The “47 series” position sensors include the AS5047D, AS5147 and AS5247 with DAEC (Dynamic Angle Error Compensation), which eliminates the measurement error attributable to propagation delay.
Integrated colour sensor for smartphones and tablets
ams has claimed that the TMD3782 is the industry's first integrated ambient light, colour (RGB) and proximity sensor that is optimised for operation behind dark glass to drive intelligent display adaption in mobile devices. The optical module is able to sense light in a similar manner to the human eye, enabling more sophisticated control of the display brightness and colour.
Reference design board for accurate current-sensing
By monitoring the voltage drop across a copper track on a PCB, a new reference design board from ams achieves linear current measurement up to 100A with an accuracy of ±1%. The board takes advantage of the very high sensitivity and precision of the AS8510, an integrated data acquisition front end which provides two measurement channels.
Reference design for lithium e-bike batteries
Implementing accurate cell monitoring and balancing without requiring a microcontroller in the (BMS) Battery Management System, ams have introduced a reference design for lithium pedelec/e-bike batteries. Battery pack and pedelec manufacturers who use the design will benefit from valuable BOM savings and a simpler circuit design.
World’s first stand-alone NFC microSD card certified for Visa and MasterCard mobile payments uses AS3922 from ams
ams AG announced that US-based DeviceFidelity, Inc. is using unique ams RF technology in its latest CredenSE 2.10 Near Field Communication (NFC) microSD card to enable secure, certified NFC transmissions between any mobile phone and contactless payment terminals from Visa and MasterCard.
Chassis control systems rely on position sensor IC
Receiving valuable endorsement from the demanding automotive industry, the AS5162 magnetic position sensor from ams has been selected by Continental for use in the company's CPS series chassis height sensor. Paired with a simple two-pole magnet, the AS5162 accurately detects angular displacements as fine as 0.09° over a full 360° revolution.
IC prototyping service scheduled for 2014
Known as Multi-Project Wafer (MPW) or shuttle run, ams has updated the schedule of the IC prototyping service for 2014. Combining several designs from different customers onto a single wafer, the prototyping service offers significant cost advantages for foundry customers as the costs for wafers and masks are shared among a number of different shuttle participants.
Cell monitoring IC for battery cell management systems
ams have today annoucned a vastly simplified and more robust method of implementing cell monitoring and balancing in lithium battery systems. A new highly integrated chip, the AS8506 performs distributed cell monitoring and balancing operations for stacked cell modules, including Safe Operating Area checks and passive or active cell balancing.
Getting smart about sensing
When coupled with native support for NFC in smartphones and tablets, NFC-enabled implantable sensors could lead to a revolution in diabetes testing and much more. Oluf Alminde, Senior Marketing Manager (Power & Wireless) with ams AG, explore more in this article from ES Design magazine.
Opto-Sensor names ams as its leading supplier
ams AG has been named by Greater China electronic component distributor Opto-Sensor as its top-selling vendor. Opto-Sensor attributes its success to the outstanding support it receives from ams, as well as the close ties and long-standing relationship between the two companies.
ams invests €25m for in-house production capacity for analog 3D ICs
ams has today announced that it has invested over €25m to create dedicated 3D IC production capacity at its wafer fabrication plant near Graz, Austria. The investment provides for the installation of new 3D IC equipment in clean room space available at the plant, situated at the company’s headquarters.
World’s first noise cancellation speaker driver ICs
ams has today announced the AS3435 and AS3415 ANC speaker drivers, paving the way for a new generation of noise cancellation stereo headsets with zero audible hiss. The AS3435 and AS3415 are also the industry’s first active noise cancellation ICs to feature integrated bypass switches, offering headset manufacturers the freedom to create sleeker – and cheaper – industrial designs.
ams introduces first LIN slave companion IC to support automotive ISO26262 requirements
ams AG today announced that the AS8530 is the world’s first miniature power/transceiver IC to support LIN slave applications, which complies with the ISO26262 functional safety standard.
Sensor-enabled RFID tags extend wireless data-logging beyond identification
ams AG today announced next-generation sensor-enabled RFID tags offering breakthroughs for medical, automotive safety and other applications where temperature, physiological or environmental data is required. The new devices, the SL13A and SL900A enable a simple, low-cost implementation of a new class of wireless data-logging applications.
LIN slave companion IC is first to support ISO26262
ams has today announced that the AS8530 is the world’s first miniature power/transceiver IC to support LIN slave applications, which complies with the ISO26262 functional safety standard. The AS8530 is a power management and communication device that includes a LIN 2.1 transceiver, a 50mA LDO to supply a local micro and a reset generator in an 8-pin SOIC 8 package.
New 8A photo flash driver from ams dramatically improves picture quality of smartphone cameras
ams AG today launched an LED flash driver that provides a photo flash light output at least four times brighter than flash systems commonly found in smartphones today.
A New Generation
Innovations in design are helping automotive manufacturers to simplify systems and reduce component count, by implementing more functions while reducing board space requirements and power consumption. By Thomas Mueller, Product Manager, Automotive ASICs with ams AG.
ams Announces Updated Business Expectations
ams has today revealed updated business expectations for 2013. ams has concluded from customer information and recent order intake that certain ramp-ups for designed-in ams products are now expected to occur late in the second half of 2013 and/or the first months of 2014. As a consequence ams expects a lower revenue trajectory in the second half of 2013 compared to previous expectations but continues to expect year-on-year revenue growth for full...
