metraTec presents UHF RFID Tunnels for demanding logistics applications
This week metraTec presents its new generation of UHF RFID tunnels which are supposed to reach a nearly 100% read rate even under difficult conditions using a new construction principle. This includes reading 300 or more UHF transponders with unknown orientation inside a box, the presence of metal between the objects or reading tags applied to bottles of liquid. The new technology the UT55 and UT75 are based on was developed and patented in cooperation with the Fraunhofer IFF research institute in Magdeburg, Germany.
The scanning boxes with a standard size of 60x40x40 cm and the UT75 which has inside dimensions of 75x75
cm so you can even scan half-sized euro-pallets with 80x60x60 cm. Besides all necessary RFID
components, the tunnels have integrated light barriers for entry/exit detection and a manual roll conveyor.
Optionally, a motorized conveyor belt can be integrated.
The motivation for developing the UHF tunnels explains metraTec-CEO Klaas Dannen: „Thanks to
continuously decreasing prices for UHF tags as well as some big RFID projects having a signalling effect,
more and more companies evaluate using item-level RFID to optimize their supply chain. The key point in
these projects is the read rate – only when 99% or more of the tags are found you can fully rely on the
system and achieve the planned cost savings. This is the goal we want to reach with our UTx product
family.“ The industries targeted by the product are currently the pharmaceutical industry as well as fashion industry where the first rollouts are happening at the moment.
