Recently the organising committee of “The 4th Annual telematics China Summit” interviewed industry gurus from leading companies about developing trends and opportunities.

According to Mr. Eric Pang, Senior Manager, Connected Services, Qoros Auto: “In China, as in the rest of the world, I see vehicle telematics as a component of the 'internet of things' becoming a bigger and bigger part of everyday life over the next 5-10 years. This could be at the individual level, such as receiving notifications from the natural gas detector in your home before you enter it. Or at the city level to control stop lights based on traffic flows.

"China is uniquely positioned in two ways to be at the forefront of this development: high smartphone penetration and sophisticated, innovative mobile applications - China has the largest and most advanced smartphone environment and userbase in the world, making it ideal for the creation, development, and testing of new ideas and ways to create the 'internet of things'; and government support - China is committed to improving the telecommunication infrastructure necessary to bring the 'internet of things' to life. This includes faster and faster internet speeds and connecting city infrastructure.”

Mr. Pang added: “Within the next five years, telematics will become a standard requirement for all cars as consumers demand the convenience and control it provides. As OEM’s all bring their systems online, this will create opportunities for the larger Tier 1 suppliers and telematics service providers to develop these systems. As Android and iOS aggressively push their way into car screens, this will open up additional functions that people had not thought of before as they link to the larger Android and iOS ecosystem.”

Mr. Zhanwei Yin, CEO, Shanghai Hangsheng Industry, also commented on the future of telematics developments: "The fast development of telematics will promote the informatisation, Intelligent and digital of Automotives, that provide a huge market for relevant companies. In the future, the cost of automotive electronic may account for 30% of the total cost of the whole car even higher to 70%, so said it would provide a huge market space, and provide basis and channel for cross industry competition, at the same time help traditional manufactures to transform into service company."

Discussing future developing trends, Mr. Xiaobin Huang, Technical Director, China Telecom Transportation ICT Application Base (Shanghai), believes that: "embedding communication modules into the car will become an important developing direction. As the industrial cooperation and division of labour is more and more specialised and elaborate, from the perspective of the architecture of the whole chain, specialised division of labour is more and more highlighted. In the future our car will become simpler, and the mobile phone function will become more and more complex and personalised, and the replacement will get faster and faster."

According to Mr. Brian Tian, Director of EESE, Volvo Car China, Volvo, thinks that: "from the global view, the demand of Chinese users to telematics are bigger than other countries, therefore Volvo will pay high attention to the Chinese user’s requirement, and produce telematics and services specifically for Chinese customers."

For the development of Volvo, he thought there are three stages: "1.0 stage is the normal telematics, 2.0 stage basically is V2V (Vehicle to Vehicle) and V2I (Vehicle to Infrastructure) that is the safe city driving system that we use, and then telematics 3.0 that Volvo has currently developed in Gothenburg headquarters is ‘drive-me’, an automatic driving system.”
