London EV Show: ultra-rapid charging hubs announced by TFL
At the London EV Show, Alex Gilbert, Head of Energy and Electrification; Commercial Development at Places for London, a TFL property company, unveiled plans to deploy electric vehicle (EV) ultra-rapid charging hubs across London.
The move aims to address the pressing issues of charging infrastructure quality and policy concerns, with an added focus on generating revenue to support further initiatives.
At the show, Gilbert said that five ultra-rapid charging hubs are to be built. These upcoming hubs mark Transport for London's inaugural introduction of ‘ultra’ charging stations. With an additional 20 hubs in the pipeline, the organisation aspires to deploy a total of 60 such facilities throughout the city by the decade's end.
The decision to enter the EV market was not taken lightly, as Gilbert explained, detailing the extensive background analysis conducted over the past few years. Factors such as the demand for charging infrastructure, supply analysis, and the mapping of charging hub locations played a crucial role in determining the strategic approach.
Through meticulous analysis, Places for London identified key areas where rapid charging hubs are needed most. The ultra-rapid charging hubs will be located in Hanger Lane, Canning Town, Hillingdon Circus, Hatton Cross, and Tottenham Hale. All will have at least six charging points – but Hanger Lane, near the junction of the A40 and A406 North Circular Road, will have up to 20, alongside new shops.
The data-driven approach ensures that EV users can conveniently access charging points, providing a 10 to 30-minute window for charging, allowing them to relax and utilise on-site amenities.
Places for London places a strong emphasis on sustainability, accessibility, and inclusivity in its charging infrastructure. Gilbert stressed the importance of adhering to high safety and reliability standards, ensuring that the charging facilities are accessible to all, including those with varying physical abilities.
Overall, Gilbert expressed excitement about the project's launch, acknowledging the collaborative efforts of the team and signalling the beginning of a new phase.
