At electronica 2014, 11th to 14th November in Munich, exhibitors will present new technologies and products in the medical-electronics sector. These will focus on the ongoing miniaturisation, increased efficiency and increased networking of components that make it easier to recognise diseases early and cure them.

Germany's industrial sector sold medical technology worth €22.9bn in 2013, making the German market the third largest in the world, after the United States and Japan (according to statistics from the German Medical Technology Association). Overall sales have been growing for years and with export rates between 60 and 65%, German medical-technology companies are well represented on the global market.

Three long-term trends will sustain growth in the medical-technology sector:

  • The need for medical care is increasing because of a demographic development toward higher life expectancy;
  • Demand for additional products and services is increasing due to the concept of health being oriented more strongly toward the quality of life; and
  • Medical electronics are a factor in technical advances which are making it possible to treat medical conditions that were previously untreatable.

Systems and components in medical technology are getting smaller with minimally invasive procedures being conducted more frequently than ever. Implants including batteries continue to decrease in size at the same time that their performance is improving. Microdul will be exhibiting tiny cochlear implants for ears that are directly connected to the auditory nerve and completely implantable pumps that can be used for liver sclerosis, certain types of cancer and heart problems.

Medical-electronics are observing health parameter to improve the prevention and monitoring of the courses of disease. Analog Devices will present its ADuCM350 meter-on-a-chip for portable applications such as vital-sign monitors that patients can wear and point-of-care diagnostic products.

The IoT is is simplifying the collection and evaluation of medical data through networking. Freescale's IoT Gateway 'One Box' is a platform for the Internet of Things that can also incorporate medical equipment and applications. This makes it possible for healthcare providers to recognise complications early and respond accordingly.
