ASTRI to present smart mobility tech

The Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute (ASTRI) is presenting its advanced smart mobility technologies, including state-of-the-art Cellular Vehicle-to-Everything (C-V2X) systems aimed at improving autonomous driving safety, at the 44th HKTDC Hong Kong Electronics Fair, from 13-16 October.

As smart mobility takes the spotlight at this year’s fair, ASTRI hosted a seminar titled 'Navigating Tomorrow: How Connected Autonomous Vehicles Reshape Industries'. Industry leaders discussed the future of autonomous driving, its market potential, and the challenges ahead. ASTRI’s Chief Operating Officer, Ir Chris Chong, highlighted the role of autonomous vehicle (AV) technology in reducing human error and unsafe driving behaviours, ultimately improving road safety. He noted that Hong Kong’s AV technology is progressing in line with global advancements, and ASTRI plans to conduct autonomous bus trials in various locations across Hong Kong next year, in support of the government’s push for driverless technologies.

Other speakers at the seminar included Mr Kenny Chan, Chief Director at ASTRI; Dr Weisong Wen, Assistant Professor at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University; Mr Richard Lee, Functional Manager at CUHK’s Jockey Club Institute of Ageing; Ms Doris Leung, Founder and CEO of Diamond Cab (Hong Kong) Limited; Mr Jojo Xu, CEO and Co-founder of Libpet Tech; and Mr Falcon Chan, Partner at Deloitte China.

ASTRI’s booth is showcasing the following smart mobility technologies:

  1. Smart mobility management platform: ASTRI’s platform offers comprehensive fleet management by monitoring vehicle status and coordinating dispatch. Integrating connected and autonomous vehicles (CAVs) with V2X systems and traffic data, the platform leverages AI to deliver real-time insights, transforming urban mobility. These insights support informed decision-making, improving the safety of drivers, passengers, and pedestrians
  2. Autonomous AIBus pilot project: Funded by the Smart Traffic Fund, this pilot project follows the Code of Practice for Autonomous Vehicle Trials introduced on 1 March 2024. The project will test autonomous buses on public roads, starting with a two-kilometre route in the West Kowloon Cultural District. A road test with selected passengers is planned for 2025, providing practical data for the future implementation of autonomous driving technology in Hong Kong
  3. Privacy-preserving sensing system on Roadside Units (RSUs): These RSUs collect environmental data while protecting personal privacy by processing information locally without transmitting it to the Cloud. This ensures real-time, low-power sensing, suitable for smart home automation and robotics. The combination of privacy and efficient sensing supports the secure integration of these technologies into everyday applications
  4. Mid-range and high-precision full-dome LiDAR: Developed using ASTRI-owned intellectual property, this LiDAR provides high-precision 3D sensing at a competitive cost. It is designed for applications such as building information modelling (BIM), security, intelligent logistics, and smart cities. The LiDAR integrates with V2X technology to detect road user movements in real-time, enhancing the navigation capabilities of CAVs
  5. Real-time on-train intrusion detection system: Co-developed by MTR and ASTRI, this system offers real-time detection of unexpected objects in tunnels using multi-sensing fusion technology. It operates effectively even in low-light conditions, generating a 3D train envelope and issuing instant alerts to enhance railway safety. The system contributes valuable data to the development of Smart Railways

In addition, Dr Justin Chuang, Vice President of Communications Technologies at ASTRI, spoke at the Symposium on Innovation & Technology, co-organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) and the Hong Kong Electronics and Technologies Association. He discussed how wireless communications technologies are advancing digital twins and related applications.
