Kontron has announced the CP6940, a 1/10/40 Gigabit Ethernet switch for CompactPCI and VME embedded systems. The CP6940, which has been specifically optimised for multicast applications, is designed for long-term programs and use in harsh environments and in an extended temperature range from -40 to +85°C.

It is suited for multi-CPU high-performance servers in the aerospace or defence sector as well as for communication networks of all types. Moreover, it is produced in Europe.

The CP6940 design relies on Broadcom's highly integrated single-chip switch technology and an additional high-performance QorIQ microcontroller. This enables higher throughput in multicast traffic through faster data routing setup and significantly higher protocol processing performance.

The CP6940 supports QSFP+ modules for high-performance network connections via 2x40G or 8x10G ports, as well as SFP+ modules for different transfer rates of 1, 2.5, 5 and 10GBase-x. The cost-optimised Value version supports Layer 2 for standard environments.

The switch complies with the two conformity standards PICMG 2.16 for CompactPCI and VITA31.1 for VME. It works non-blocking and offers Layer 2 and 3 functionality with fully developed management. Features such as Hot Swap, Intelligent Platform Management Interface (IPMI), SNMP protocol and integrated test options make administration, monitoring and maintenance simple and time-saving.

The rich feature set includes support for IPv4/IPv6 forwarding and multicast, routing, switching, quality of service, VLANs, Spanning Tree Protocol (STP, RSTP, MSTP), time synchronisation via 802.1AS and access control. The switch can be upgraded to a Time Sensitive Networking (TSN) switch with the corresponding software.

CP6940 variants are largely backward compatible to CP6930 and CP6924. They can be ordered immediately and first units will be available within this year.
