Stanley Electric, a leading optoelectronics device manufacturer has released a compact high-power surface mount IR LEDs equipped with high-output, high-efficiency LED die with a low thermal resistance ceramic substrate.

It is in stock at Anglia Components.

The range of IR LED’s available from Stanley include 855nm and 945nm wavelength options with a choice of narrow angle 60 degree or wide angle 120 degree Half-intensity angle, all parts are housed in a compact 3.8 x 3.8mm surface mount package with a low profile height of 2.1mm. The package features low thermal resistance combined with high reliability.

The MGN and MFN series are housed in a black coloured package making them ideal for security camera applications.

Stanley’s MHN series of IR LEDs offers exceptionally high radiant flux up to 1630mW with 945nm wavelength, due to its high performance and low thermal resistance package this range of IR LEDs can be used in a wide range of demanding applications including factory automation, machine vision and automotive driver monitoring systems.

Like high-power visible light LEDs, designers must take care to consider the thermal management of IR LEDs to ensure they get maximum performance and reliability.

High temperature conditions can cause the output power of the IR LED to drop and the operating life to shorten, if left unchecked the IR LED will eventually fail.

Also, heat can adversely affects the surrounding devices, calling for heat dissipation measures which can be expensive and take up valuable PCB space.

Stanley has addressed these issues and minimise the heating effect of the IR LED by adopting a LED die with low forward voltage (VF), this also reduces power consumption.

In addition by employing materials and structures that reduce the thermal resistance of the package, the heat generation of the LEDs is greatly reduced compared to existing products. The chart below compares Stanley high-power IR LEDs (characterised by high efficiency and low heat generation) with the existing products in terms of substrate temperature. The rise in PCB temperature is small compared to the existing products, combined with high density mounting and miniaturisation it is possible to reduce the PCB area required using the latest Stanley IR LED products.

Replacing traditional conventional through hole IR LEDs with Stanley’s wide angle surface mount IR LEDs this allows designers greater flexibility with the placement of the IR LED device as well as simplifying the production process by removing the need for a separate wave solder process for the through hole component placement. In addition the performance of the surface mount IR LED from Stanley is superior to the traditional through hole IR LED meaning the performance of the end product can be improved and it is even possible to use less devices to get comparable performance.
