Improved graphics for gaming, entertainment and medical imaging
Modules and boards based on the new AMD Ryzen(TM) Embedded V1000 processors were announced by Kontron at embedded world last week. Kontron uses the platform for formfactor COM Express Compact and Mini-ITX. The new AMD Ryzen Embedded V1000 processors combine high-performance x86 ‘Zen’ CPUs with advanced ‘Vega’ GPUs into a single chip as an accelerated processing unit (APU), offering customers a suitable foundation for digital casino gaming, medical imaging, communication, digital signage and more.
Kontron displayed a COM Express board with the new AMD Ryzen V1000 processors at embedded world 2018. Most importantly, these modules and boards are a suitable solution for embedded devices that need a short time-to-market, stable technologies, low board complexity, and comprehensive I/Os.
The AMD Ryzen Embedded V1000 processors are made in the 14nm FinFET process, and deliver up to 2X more performance than previous generations. Power consumption ranges from 12-54W. The L3 cache enables efficient portioning of data between the storage cores. The universal DDR4 3200 non-ECC/ECC support for dedicated APUs supports high-performance applications. Port options include broad I/O ranges with PCIe Gen3, USB 3.1, SATA and Gigabit Ethernet as well as USB-C.
With up to 11 Compute Units and support for up to four independent displays with up to 4K resolution, the AMD Ryzen Embedded V1000 processors offer up to 3X more GPU performance than competitive solutions. Additionally, the new processors enable 10-bit decoding, H.265 (HEVC) 10-bit decoding and 8-bit encoding via VP9.
The AMD Ryzen Embedded V1000 processors also come with numerous security features, including an on-board secure processor for crypto co-processing, Secure Memory Encryption (SME) to help guard against unwanted physical storage access, as well as Secure Encrypted Virtualisation (SEV) for encrypting virtual machine (VM) storage to help protect it against attacks from administrators and application code.
Kontron modules and boards based on the AMD Ryzen Embedded V1000 processors support the Kontron APPROTECT Security Solution. Based on an integrated WIBU-SYSTEMS security chip and in tandem with a specifically developed software framework, it provides IP and copy/reverse engineering protection. Kontron APPROTECT Licensing also enables new business models such as ‘pay per use’, demo versions for limited time periods, or activation/deactivation functions.
Stephen Turnbull, director of marketing, Datacenter and Embedded Business Unit, AMD: "The new AMD Ryzen Embedded V1000 processors combine the powerful ‘Zen’ core architecture and stunning ‘Vega’ graphics architecture to enable brilliant results, all in a single processor that is both energy and space-conscious. The Ryzen Embedded V1000 processor is suitable for medical imaging, casino gaming, and industrial systems. With these high-performance products, we are thrilled to usher in a new age for embedded processors."
Peter Müller, Director of Productline Boards & Modules, Kontron S&T AG: "With the new AMD Ryzen Embedded V1000 processors, we are expecting many opportunities for Kontron in industrial and embedded, including medical, digital signage, and gaming systems. Applications in these fields require high-performance computing in cost-sensitive sectors. We are convinced that we will reach a broader customer spectrum with the performance and value of the AMD Ryzen Embedded V1000 in our COM Express modules und Mini-ITX motherboards.”
AMD offers product availability for up to 10 years, providing customers a long lifecycle support roadmap.
