Vector Software announced today that EUROS Embedded Systems has selected the VectorCAST test platform to be used for the certification of the microkernel component of its Real-Time Operating systems EUROS.

Beyond functional requirements, in the case of safety and security applications, the demands on the reliability, availability, safety and security requirements of the EUROS Microkernel have been dramatically increased. It must especially guarantee the system integrity against external influences, sabotage or espionage.

In order to meet all those requirements, e.g. increasing both functional safety and security level and in the same time reducing the risk for embedded applications, a certification process according to the IEC 61508 Edition 2 (SIL3) and IEC 62443 standards was initiated. The company TÜV SÜD AG was chosen as auditor.

The certification process is based on TÜV SÜD pioneering approach referred to as “Embedded Systems - System tested. This new certification combines the aspects of functional safety and security requirements into a single process and documents the successful result on a single certificate. Thus the EUROS microkernel will be the first certified RTOS for both “Functional Safety” and “Security”.

“In the course of our certification, we teamed with Vector Software to help us test and certify our new microkernel. Vector Software's VectorCAST embedded software testing platform was identified as the ideal solution for developing critical software in compliance with the IEC 61508 standard,” stated Dr. Stefan Kaneff, Managing Director of EUROS Embedded Systems. “As a result of this effort, customers can significantly accelerate the certification of their own application using the VectorCAST suite, which has been integrated with the EUROS RTOS.”

“The combination of security and functional safety is playing an increasingly important role for embedded systems,” stated William McCaffrey, Vector Software Chief Operating Officer. “We are honored to be part of the development of this new TÜV SÜD certification that sets an important benchmark for the entire industry.”
