Toshiba and IAR have today introduced an embedded systems ‘starter kit’ that will speed development of smart meters, weighing scales and other applications that demand ultra-high-precision measurement. The new Starterkit is built around Toshiba’s TMPM061FWFG microcontroller, which is the first Toshiba microcontroller to use the ARM Cortex-M0 core.
This dual core device is optimised for smart metering and other precision measurement applications where it can replace a traditional two-chip analogue front end and processor with a single IC. Key features include a high-accuracy power calculation engine and high-precision 24-bit Delta-Sigma analogue-to-digital converters.

Combining a compact 140mm x 100mm evaluation board with all necessary software and documentation, the KickStart Kit is ready for ‘out-of-box’ operation. As well as the Toshiba microcontroller, the evaluation board includes a JTAG connector, an on-board debugger (eliminating the need for a debug probe and emulator), and a trace connector. An LCD display and user-programmable LEDs are also provided. Connectivity includes a USB driver and connector, an RS232 driver, three BNC connectors for analogue inputs and a UART interface. Board power options comprise USB, JTAG, on-board power jack and batteries.

The new kit is supported by the IAR Embedded Workbench for ARM integrated development environment. This IDE is a complete set of C/C++ compiler, debugger and project management tools and includes ready-made configuration files, flash loaders and over 3000 example projects. Using the IDE developers can rapidly program and debug the microcontroller - including modification and updating the basic energy use calculations supplied with the device.
