Tesla recalls Cybertrucks over safety concerns

Priced at approximately $61,000 (£48,320), these vehicles are now under scrutiny for a potential hazard that could increase the risk of crashes.

The core of the issue lies in the accelerator pedals, which pose a risk of becoming trapped by the interior trim. This defect can cause unintended acceleration, as noted by the US Department of Transportation in a recent notification about the recall.

Further complicating matters, a whistleblower within Tesla previously raised alarms regarding the safety of pedal designs in other models, bringing into question the overall reliability of pedal configurations across the company’s range. This concern came to light following discussions with the BBC.

Despite the pressing safety risks, Tesla has assured owners that there is a contingency in place: pressing the brake pedal will override the accelerator and should bring the vehicle to a stop. The company has committed to rectifying the fault at no charge to the vehicle owners, according to its recent filings with the US government.

The design flaw stems from an "unapproved change" in the pedal production process, which included the use of a lubricant. This modification prevented the pad from adhering correctly to the pedal, leading to the potential for it to dislodge and become entrapped.

To date, Tesla has received two complaints regarding this issue from drivers. However, the company has stated that it is "not aware of any collisions, injuries, or deaths relating to this condition," as of the 15th April.

As Tesla's first new model in nearly four years, the Cybertruck holds significant importance for the company's image as an innovator in the vehicle industry. This launch comes at a crucial time when Tesla is navigating a period of fluctuating demand for electric vehicles (EVs) and increasing competition.
