Sub-1GHz transceiver targets IoT applications
The S2-LP ultra-low power, sub-1GHz transceiver from STMicroelectronics (ST) is now being shipped by Mouser Electronics. A successor to ST’s SPIRIT1, the S2-LP radio chip offers designers increased transmission range, greater selectivity, ultra-low power consumption, and high configuration flexibility for Internet of Things (IoT) applications.
The transceiver is an ultra-low-power radio optimised for radio frequency (RF) products in the sub-1GHz band. The device operates in the license-free ISM and Short-Range Devices (SRD) frequency bands, with additional frequencies available through programming.
The transceiver is ideal for use in networked products and support connectivity to the Sigfox global network, Wireless M-Bus, 6LowPAN, and IEEE 802.15.4g standards.
It draws just 6.7mA when receiving, and 10mA when transmitting at an output power of 10dBm.
Equipped with an efficient power-management circuit, the transceiver provides an integrated switching regulator that enables it to operate from a 1.8V to 3.6V input at a power-conversion efficiency of 90 percent — making the S2-LP ideal for battery-powered products.
The S2-LP is supported by three development kits — the STEVAL-FKI915V1, the STEVAL-FKI433V1 and the STEVAL-FKI868V1 — also available from Mouser Electronics.
Target RF wireless applications for the S2-LP device include IoT devices, wireless alarm systems, smart metering, smart lighting, industrial monitoring, building automation, and smart home systems.
