Altium, a developer and provider of electronics design solutions, supports the sixth Formula Student Germany, held from 2-7 August 2011 at the Hockenheimring race track in Germany. A total of 108 teams from more than 20 countries competed with their race car designs to be the best of the best in various disciplines.
Altium sponsors student teams at the international Formula Student design competition

For several years now, Altium has been sponsoring a number of Formula Student teams by providing them with Altium Designer and TASKING software licenses as well as technical support and training. This allows students to familiarize themselves with Altium's unified electronics design environment, to work with the latest design tool technologies, and to find out for themselves the efficiency and ease of use of the Altium solutions.

In the Formula Student Combustion 2011 category Altium sponsored the Baltic Racing team from the University of Applied Sciences Stralsund, and FaSTTUBe from the Technical University of Berlin. Sponsored participants in the Formula Student Electric competition, which was held for the second time in 2011 and where electric race cars compete against each other, included High Speed Karlsruhe from the University of Karlsruhe, AMZ Racing from ETH Zurich, Racing Team from the Technical University of Delft, and University Racing Eindhoven from the Technical University of Eindhoven.

The teams sponsored by Altium were very successful: Racing Team from Delft TU won the Formula Student Electric, ETH Zurich ranked 2nd, Racing Eindhoven 6th and High Speed Karlsruhe 19th.

Formula Student is an ideal opportunity to learn about project management under real-life conditions, since a successful business plan and sales strategy are just as important as the car's design and racing performance.

It is impressive to see the enthusiasm and conscientiousness with which the young engineers master the new challenges each season, said Frank Krämer, Technical Marketing Director EMEA, Altium. Formula Student is unique because the students work on a practical project, gain a lot of experience and are able to use state-of-the-art tools such as our electronics design software, Altium Designer.

Altium also sponsors other educational projects in the automotive sector, such as eCARus, an electric vehicle student project at the Technical University of Munich, and Solar Team Twente – also known as the Formula 1 of solar cars – which is due to participate in the World Solar Challenge.
