Free tools extend developer access to STM32 MCUs
STMicroelectronics has made its free development tools for STM32 MCUs available to Mac computer users, who can now easily create embedded designs without leaving their favourite operating environment. The STM32 development tools for OS X support the complete embedded design flow and comprise the STM32CubeMX graphical configuration tool and System Workbench for STM32 including the drivers that enable direct use of ST debugging and programming probes.
The tools are easy to install and use, as OS X users have come to expect from their equipment.
The current release follows the recent launch of corresponding tools for Linux users, making the STM32 family readily accessible to techs and creatives comfortable with any popular computer platform, whether Windows, Linux or OS X operating systems.
Tools for all platforms can be downloaded freely at www.st.com/stm32cubemx and www.st.com/sw4stm32. They are compatible with the STM32Cube Hardware Abstraction Layer, middleware components and demonstration code and ST’s Standard Peripheral Library. Users can also take advantage of STM32Snippets low-overhead code examples, STM32Cube expansion software packages and accelerated hardware development using STM32 Nucleo boards, STM32 Discovery Kits or fully-featured Evaluation boards.
By extending its free tools across the main PC operating systems, ST empowers embedded-system designers to choose from over 600 STM32 MCU variants. Devices span the core performance and power spectrum from low-frequency ARM Cortex-M0 to high-speed Cortex-M7, cost-sensitive devices with minimal peripheral integration and low pin-count packages, as well as richly-featured variants with high on-chip Flash density and peripherals such as precision analog, USB, Ethernet and hardware encryption.
The STM32 MCU family also includes two special ultra-low-power STM32L series, featuring the Cortex-M0 or Cortex-M4 core, which are optimised for the most energy-conscious applications.
