dSPACE MicroAutoBox II: FPGA Flexibilizes Function Development

Two new features give the dSPACE MicroAutoBox II great flexibility for specialized rapid control prototyping tasks: an integrated Spartan-6 FPGA that is programmable by model-based design1), and new I/O extension modules.
This technology can be used for performing tasks such as the low-latency analysis of large data volumes independently of the MicroAutoBox processor, for example, in the development of innovative combustion engines. Computation-intensive signal processing algorithms and fast control loops can be run on the FPGA to save resources. Because the FPGA can address numerous control and measurement channels in parallel, one of its typical uses is the control of electric motors and converters.



dSPACE achieved the extra flexibility by a combination of measures.

From now on, the FPGA integrated into MicroAutoBox II (MicroAutoBox II 1401/1511/1512) can be programmed with VHDL or via modeling in MATLAB®/Simulink® in combination with Xilinx® and dSPACE tools.

Each of the two new I/O extension modules provides broad functionalities. The internal FPGA board has a slot where either of the modules can be plugged for complete integration into the MicroAutoBox II.



New I/O Extension Modules for MicroAutoBox II

The new DS1552 Multi-I/O Module has powerful analog and digital I/O interfaces for connecting sensors and actuators to the FPGA in the MicroAutoBox II.

For electric drives, dSPACE now also offers its AC Motor Control (ACMC) Solution for the MicroAutoBox II. The solution is a complete package of hardware and software components (I/O module, RTI blockset, Simulink demo models) that supports function prototyping for electric drives, for example, in electric and hybrid vehicles.



Additional Options for Use in Industry, Research and Education

The flexibility provided by the FPGA in the MicroAutoBox II opens up numerous additional application options, such as the development of active vibration damping; noise reduction techniques; high-precision positioning tasks; synchronous, high-resolution signal generation and measurement; and other tasks from automotives, industrial automation, medical engineering, aviation and other fields.
